THE SANITATION PROBLEM
Estimates note that 32% of the world’s population (2.4 billion people) lacked improved sanitation facilities in 2015. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more. Many countries lack the technical knowledge to develop and implement centralized sanitation solutions.
Global Water Stewardship resolves sanitation issues in the developing world by educating people and engineering sustainable centralized solutions that keep waterways clean and communities healthy.
THE GWS SOLUTION
Global Water Stewardship (GWS) has 1,300 members in our host organization that are experts in the planning, engineering, operations and maintenance of sustainable centralized wastewater and sanitation collection and treatment systems. We utilize university student design competitions for concept designs and then work with local engineers in the host country to finalize the design and implement the solution.
Through this process, we educate individuals on how to design, implement, operate, and maintain centralized wastewater collection and treatment systems. We develop user fee structures for ongoing operations and maintenance costs and work with community outreach individuals to get community buy-in.
ABOUT US
Global Water Stewardship (GWS) was established in 2013 by the Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA), a member association of the Water Environment Federation (WEF). Our founders saw a pressing need to address global sanitation issues and decided it was time to use their industry expertise to make a difference. The organization steadily grew utilizing the tremendous talent of CSWEA and WEF water treatment professionals, as well as passionate students and working professionals, from various backgrounds, dedicated to making a positive impact.
In 2017, GWS became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, still working to improve health and quality of life for those lacking sufficient resources and experience in proper sanitation methods. A centralized sanitation system enhances a community's prosperity and dramatically reduces mortality and poverty. Addressing sanitation is so important that it remains our number one priority today. WAYS TO GIVE
FAQ
Why donate to GWS?
Global Water Stewardship works to preserve the environment while protecting public health in communities that have developed potable water supply. Many communities lack proper sanitation and knowledge of proper sanitation leading to disease and death.
Where do the donations go?
Proceeds are used to fund partial travel costs, professional services, education, and to perform work at the GWS project sites. At this time, proceeds would be used directly to fund permitting and final engineering to assist in getting GWS’ first project kicked off in Piedras Blancas, Costa Rica. Cost sharing would be performed by the country of Costa Rica by paying for the actual construction services themselves.
Can my donation be written off in my taxes?
Yes, Global Water Stewardship is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (EIN 81-2340154).
